Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular rulings made by the official, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
