Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
