British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
