Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
